Distinguished Speaker Brown-Bag Luncheon: The Transport Revolution in Calgary's Future
Monday, February 4, 2008 from 12:00 - 1:00 PMEarth Sciences Building (ES342), University of Calgary
Calgary, more than most cities, depends on transport fueled by low-priced oil. If the peak in world oil production were to occur by 2012, big changes would lie ahead for the way Calgarians move themselves and the goods they depend upon (like fresh fruit in February). Peak oil could be followed by gradually accelerating oil depletion during a period when world oil consumption is projected to increase substantially. The shortfall between expected demand and supply could result in extremely high oil prices. Another challenge is potentially catastrophic climate change caused at least in part by combustion of oil and other fossil fuels.
What would Calgary's transport options look like in such a future? High oil prices in particular could give rise to two or more revolutions in land transport during the first half of the 21st century. One would involve the replacement of internal combustion engines by electric motors. Another would involve widespread powering of these motors directly from the electric grid rather than from onboard fuel. Together, and with necessary organizational innovations, these transformations would allow considerable movement of people and freight by land in an era of severe energy constraints and concerns about carbon emissions. Presented by the Institute for Advanced Policy Research.
Dr. Perl joined Simon Fraser University in 2005 as Professor of Urban Studies and Director of the Urban Studies Program. He is also cross appointed as Professor of Political Science. He received an undergraduate honours degree in Government from Harvard University, an MA specializing in Public Administration and a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Toronto. His research crosses disciplinary and national boundaries to explore the political dynamics that influence transportation system performance. He has published widely in scholarly journals and has produced four books entitled: The Politics of Improving Urban Air Quality; New Departures: Rethinking Rail Passenger Policy in the Twenty-First Century; The Integrity Gap: Canada's Environmental Policy and Institutions, and Transport Revolutions: Moving People and Freight Without Oil. Dr. Perl's work has also been awarded for outstanding papers presented at the World Conference on Transport Research and the Canadian Transportation Research Forum.

Sustainable Environmental Design Keynote Series: High Rise Buildings
Tuesday, February 5, 2008 from 11:30 AM - 1:15 PMThe Metropolitan Centre, 333 - 4 Avenue SW
The Calgary Chamber of Commerce and The University of Calgary present Alejandro Zaera-Polo as part of their series on sustainable environmental design.
The extraordinary increase of high-rise construction opens an opportunity for considering its possibilities as an urban typology. High-rise fever is putting unprecedented pressure on urban cores to accommodate new skyscrapers, often forcing city leaders to rethink their planning policies. Many policies are already under development in different cities, and it is interesting to notice that the attitude towards high-rise buildings has deep cultural roots.
The relationship between high-rise buildings and cities is a complex one, and is strongly tinged with local flavor. In the U.S., the downtown has been traditionally linked to high-density and high-rise buildings primarily dedicated to workspace. In Europe, where the closest precedents of skyscrapers are church towers and other representations of power, high-rises have been generally perceived as anti-urban and exiled to special precincts away from the center. Asian cities have located their high-rises less idiosyncratically, as punctual intensifications of the fabric. High-rises have become a more continuous distribution, usually related to transport infrastructure capacity and location.
Alejandro Zaera-Polo studied at the E.T.S. of Architecture in Madrid and received a master(MARCHII) degree from Harvard Graduate School of Design in 1991. Together with Farshid Moussavi he founded in London Foreign Office Architects in 1995.
FOA is an international practice of architecture and urban design, dedicated to the exploration of contemporary urban conditions, lifestyles and construction technologies. The office is engaged in a wide variety of projects, ranging from small scale housing developments to department stores, office complexes and urban parks & auditoriums. Projects realized are among others the Yokohama International Port Terminal in Japan, and the Barcelona Forum Park in Spain. Besides his architectural work Alejandro Zaera-Polo is currently the Dean of Berlage Institute and lectures at several architectural schools around the world.
Tickets are $60.00 for members and $95.00 for future members. Registration begins at 11:30 AM and the program begins at 12:00 PM. Call 750-0426 or email register@calgarychamber.com.

Movies That Matter: The Business of Being Born
Monday, February 11, 2008 at 7:00 PMEPCOR Centre, Engineered Air Theatre, 205 - 8 Avenue SE
Birth: it's a miracle. A rite of passage. A natural part of life. But more than anything, birth is a business.
Ricki Lake recruits Director Abby Epstein to examine today's American hospital system after her own disappointing birthing experience with her first child. She discovers that hospitals are making decisions based on monetary factors and not based on what is best for mother and child. When Epstein joined forces with Lake she could have never predicted what an intimate event producing the Business of Being Born would be. Part way through filming, Epstein discovers she is pregnant making the journey much more personal.
The Business of Being Born interlaces stories of women caught in the cycle of the American maternity care system. Astounding historical, political and scientific insights are revealed, as well as shocking statistics about how giving birth has turned into a billion dollar business.
Epstein and Lake expose the 'naked truth' surrounding birthing issues. They reinforce the idea of birth as a natural rite of passage and raise important questions about the operations of the American maternity care system which is stripping women of their right to give birth naturally.
"…this film is so persuasive that, if enough women see it, there's likely to be a serious boom in the midwifery trade." – The Los Angeles Times
Admission is $5 for students and seniors and $10 for adults. Calgary Dollars are accepted. Buy tickets at the door. For more information, please visit www.thebusinessofbeingborn.com or www.epcorcentre.org.

Sustainable Environmental Design Keynote Series: Jaime Lerner
Tuesday, March 11, 2008 from 5:30 PM - 8:30 PMCalgary Chamber of Commerce, 100 - 6 Avenue SW
The Calgary Chamber of Commerce and The University of Calgary present Jaime Lerner on "Sustainable Cities" as part of the Sustainable Environmental Design Keynote Series.
Learn why the crucial urban problems of cities are mobility, sustainability and identity.
- MOBILITY: In terms of mobility, the future is on the surface. Entire generations cannot be sacrificed waiting for a subway line, while in less than two years complete networks of on surface transportation can be set up.
- SUSTAINABILITY: Focus on what we know about the problem, instead of on what we don't know. And, above all, to transfer this knowledge to the children, who will then teach their parents.
- IDENTITY: Identity is a major factor of quality of life; it represents the synthesis of the relationship between the individual and his/her city. Identity, self-esteem, a feeling of belonging, all of them are closely connected to the points of reference people have about their own city.
Tickets are $75.00 for members and $110 for non-members. Registration begins at 5:30 PM, followed by dinner at 6:30 PM and the program at 7:30 PM. To register email: register@calgarychamber.com.

Arusha Action Film Series: Film TBD
Wednesday, March 19, 2008 at 7:00 PMPlaza Theatre, 1133 Kensington Road NW
Some of the most important and provocative films being released are documentaries. In our 24-hour news world dominated by celebrity culture, the documentary is unique, allowing viewers to delve more deeply into topics of concern and be inspired to take action. The group viewing experience of a film is a great motivator for prompting further research when people start discussing the issues in the lobby and take it to the streets.
The Arusha Centre's Action Film Series screens timely and challenging films and links them to the Calgarians working on related issues. Action Films showcases subject matter which is linked to local issues and have the potential of inspiring viewers to take local action on issues of global concern. This means that the films are introduced by local researchers, performers, activists, specialists, or the film makers themselves. To date films have been screened on issues involving workers' rights (The Take), organic food (The Real Dirt on Farmer John), global warming (The Great Warming), labor and human rights (Stolen Childhoods), and anti-consumerism (BIKE). Each event featured both information and presentations by local activists and celebrated local successes.
Tickets are $10 at the door. 100% Calgary Dollars are accepted. For more information visit films.arusha.org.
