December 2009

  • celebrate Christmas, exchange gifts with friends and family,
and want to give gifts that are meaningful and personalizedif-you-december-2009.jpg
this year – give the gift of your time. Time gift certificates can include anything from: gardening help, child care, cooking a dinner (romantic or otherwise), organizing an adventure experience like snowshoeing or hiking, or gifting someone with an entire day where your time (cooking, cleaning, errand running, whatever is wanted or needed) is at your recipient’s disposal.
  • want to give gifts that are planet-friendly, visit www.davidsuzuki.org and give “Gifts that Keep on Greening”; or visit the World Wildlife Fund store where you can purchase organic gifts, or give the gift of wildlife adoption in support of WWF-Canada’s conservation efforts.
  • want to get creative and give gifts that are truly personalized, consider giving home-made gifts this year. They might include baking your famous cookies; cooking and freezing your favourite recipes that can be easily reheated; making custom jewellery (necklaces or earrings for women/tie tacks for men); creating a scrap book or photo album filled with images from your favourite memories with the person you’re gifting; or show a loved one you have been actively listening to them speak about their dreams, passions, and goals by creating a personalized Ambitions Jar. (Ambition Jar instructions: Cut paper into small strips, on each individual strip write down one dream or goal you’ve heard your loved one mention. Once you’ve recorded all the persons’ aspirations, place the individual strips into a glass jar. Decorate the jar by tying ribbon or string around the jar’s mouth, and attach a gift tag titled ‘Ambitions’. Include additional blank strips so that future dreams or goals can be added, and remember to remind the recipient to remove the goal or dream from the jar once it has been achieved.)
  • want to donate to a cause that is close to the heart of your gift recipient, visit www.canadahelps.org and choose from any of Canada’s 83,000 charities. You can purchase Charity Gift Cards (so your loved one can choose the charity themself), or you can make a donation in their honour by creating a Giving Page. Just select the charity of choice and donate in your loved one’s name.
  • want to help family and friends green their homes this holiday season, purchase green electricity from Bullfrog Power. It’s a cost effective gift (between $5-$12/month depending on home size and average monthly usage) that enables you to help build more wind power generation facilities in Alberta, while helping family and friends go green. And because you don’t have to pay all at once like you do for most gifts, it’s easier on your personal cash flow. Visit Bullfrog Power online and enter promo code “REAP” and you’ll even get the first month free.
  • want to support local, environmentally responsible businesses in selecting gifts for your eco-enthusiast friends, consider giving REAP Passports. These coupon books offer $7300 in savings on a wide variety of green goods and services. Everything from haircuts and fashion to groceries and building materials are included. Buy them online at www.reapcalgary.com or at REAP Member businesses (Babes In Arms, Claudia’s Choices, Community Natural Foods, Effective Health Solutions, Green Calgary Eco-Store, greengate garden centre, and Riva’s The Eco Store all carry them).
