Web Review: www.ecôllo.com
By Chandra McDonald
One small step for man (or woman) kind – and we’re not talking about walking on the moon! Rather visit www.ecôllo.com – a website dedicated to reaching out to everyday eco-conscious people who just want to do a little something, each and every day to make a difference.
The site was launched in the Fall of 2007 and is maintained by three online personalities: Pinky Bean (the writer), Leafy Green (the eco-explorer), and CeeBee (the outdoors adventurist). The goal of Ecôllo is to be equal parts informative, entertaining, interesting, and funny all while helping the average, every-day consumer live their lives a little more eco-consciously.
“While education is a big part of what we do,” says Leafy Green, “we like to have fun to.”
So, if you aren’t exactly sure just what little steps you can take to make a difference today – visit Ecôllo.com and search anything that comes to mind. (Really, you can search just about anything.) On my first introduction to the site (and during subsequent visits), I found the plethora of information and content of articles to be absolutely amazing. Simply presented and wonderfully written.
From the homepage there are main articles of interest that are relevant to seasonal events, current issues, and health topics, including the Tip of the Day.
There are a variety of rotating main categories that are found along the right hand side of any page you view. Each of these categories contain a filing of fantastic articles available for instant access. Some of my personal favorites can be found under the following categories, which include:
- The Green Kitchen – you can find great tips through the 8 Ways to Green-ify Your Kitchen, and there’s also an Eco-Friendly Booze article! (I’m a wino at heart, but who wouldn’t love this article?!)
- The Garden and Grocery – the article Eating Organic vs. Eating Local captured my attention considering a recent discussion with friends on this very same topic.
- The Backyard Buffet – a newbie gardener I wish I had known about this site last year while harvesting my first treasured vegetables from my first backyard garden. The article The Basics of Harvesting Your Garden was fantastic!
- Squeaky Clean – the article Vinegar – The Ultimate in Natural Cleaning. So simple, so true. I felt like this article had been written by my naturalist grandmother.
- Get Out and Play – one of my all time personal favorite sections. Especially as an outdoor enthusiast, I am passionate about all things that can be experienced outdoors in our beautiful city or the neighboring Rocky Mountains. Like many other outdoorsy folks I practice the ethics of leave no trace – what comes in with me, must come out with me – therefore I especially liked tip #6: Be Prepared to Leave With More Than You Came With, in the article 10 tips for an Eco-Friendly Picnic.
The folks at Ecôllo believe: if you come across a good idea, try it! If it works, tell a friend. One idea at a time, one change at a time, and together we can all make a difference.
TAKE ACTION:
- Visit www.ecôllo.com and learn about the little ideas, and little changes you can make in your life today to make a difference. Remember if it works, tell a friend! (It’s the Ecôllo way.)
- If you’ve come across a good idea, have tried it, and it works – you can choose to share it with Ecôllo. Simply click on the Send Us a Story link as found across the top of the homepage, fill out everything they ask for, and maybe your story will end up published on the site.
- Check out the various links to Ecôllo Friends, which contains a list of green related businesses.
- Track your actions each time you choose to implement one small change. Remember it takes only 21 days to develop a new habit.
